The Great Train Joggery Ultra
The Great Train Joggery , 35 mile ultra. Point to point from Hitchin to Huntingdon (own way back via direct train line).
WHERE TO PARK ON THE DAY OF THE EVENT
The best place to park is in Woodside Car Park, just off Walsworth Road (B656) in Hitchin. On a Saturday it is FREE to park all day. This is the best car park because it is a 5 minute walk away from Hitchin train station and a 5 minute walk from the event HQ in Bancroft park too. It is perfectly situated to get to the start and to get to if you get th train back to Hitchin when collecting your car.
This will be held under the the bandstand in Bancroft Recreation Park in Hitchin. You cannot miss it as it stands out in the middle of the park and the park itself is not huge. Registration will be open from 6:30am.
If you would like us to transport any bags you would like at the end then please give them to us and you will have it ready for you at the finish. Typical things to pack include a change of clothing, towels, snacks, car keys and anything else too.
Each participant will need to carry the basics with them to comply with event rules. These are essential in the event of an emergency. you will need to have a running back pack that will include:
- Bottles that are full up
- Sugary snacks
- Basic first aid equipment
- Foil blanket or a lightweight waterproof jacket
- Mobile phone
- Event Map
EVENT START TIME
The event will start at 7:30am
The distance is 33 miles or 54km
It has 138 meters of overall climbing, so for an Ultra that is practically flat! It is perfect for first time ultra runners as it is one of the shortest ultras, plus being flat too helps a lot, or for the experienced it is the perfect warm up for a bigger challenge ahead.
There is a mixture of terrains, ranging from tarmac, to tracks, trails, fields and paths. There will be some road crossings too. Please remember to act responsibly at all times, do not risk yourselves for a few extra seconds for any reason, as ultra running is more about the challenge than the time you get. No two courses are ever the same! It is a point to point route, so this means you will need to get the train home, unless you have a loved one coming to support you who will happily drive you back.
NAVIGATING THE COURSE
The course will have arrows up along the entire length of it. Some will be big, some a little smaller and some smaller ones still. They will all be the standard black arrows on a bright yellow background that you typically see at many events. In the event that any arrows are damaged or removed (sadly it happens), we will have barrier tape tied to specific locations, especially turnings etc, so that you can see you are on the right track and that you have not gone wrong. This tape will say EVENT IN PROGRESS or similar, and they can be short pieces to show you are going the right way. Also, to go with arrows and tape, we will provide every one of you a map to follow with specific instructions and check points by using the popular location app, What3words. And finally, you will all be sent the GPX file of the route in the week of the event too. So to summarise:
Huntingdon is approx. 35 miles away from Hitchin if driving, taking about 40-45 minutes to get to. The finish is at XXX. We will provide a map of the route closer the time so that your supporters will know where to see you along the way of they would like to.
YOUR FOOD AT EACH STATION
We will email you all closer the time to see what you like to snack on at each aid station, so if you want pizza at 25 miles, that’s what you can have! If you like pasta or sandwiches, no problem! We will specifically put out on each station what you would like so you know what is coming up. We will also have a selection of the usual generic sugary foods too to help top you up, along with the usual sugary drinks.
MEDALSThe medals will be bespoke for the event and not a generic one either. You deserve a good one!
FOOD AT THE END
At the end you will be treated to a table of food and drink to help refuel you. We will have a selection of nice things plus if you have any requests then we will do our best to accommodate this too. The finish line also happens to be right outside a pub too, the perfect place to meet family and friends for a post-event meal and pint if you choose to do so!
GETTING HOME BY TRAIN
The train station is about 1km from the finish of the event. If you would like us to ferry you to the train station from the event finish then we will do that for you, after all you have just completed 33 miles! This service is FREE. It is quite cheap to get the train home on a Saturday, and being one way, at present it costs £8.30 to get back to Hitchin (prices correct as of 31/08/2021). The good part is that once you arrive back in Hitchin, your car is only a 5 minute walk away.
